A funeral typically occurs within days or weeks of a death and often incorporates a burial or cremation as part of the ceremony. A memorial service takes place after burial or cremation has already happened, and may be held weeks or months afterward. Both create meaningful opportunities to gather, reflect and celebrate a life.
Wherever you worship, we can make the arrangements to hold a funeral service there. Traditional Catholic funerals are typically held in Catholic churches. However, some families choose to hold funerals in a funeral home or another place of significance.
A Catholic funeral in Australia typically follows a structured set of rites, but families can personalise parts of it. It usually unfolds in three main stages:
1. Vigil (also known as the rosary or wake)
This often happens the evening before the funeral at home or a church and includes prayers and readings.
2. Funeral mass (also known as the requiem mass)
This is the main part of the funeral, often presided over by a priest. It features spoken bible passages, hymns and prayers, and the coffin/casket is present at the front of the church.
3. Committal (burial or cremation)
This takes place at the cemetery or crematorium. It’s typically a short service led by a priest with final prayers before the coffin/casket is lowered into the ground or transported for cremation.
